"Creepy Clown" response shared with students this morning

I wanted to share with you all the response to the "Creepy Clowns" that I just shared with the students this morning.

As many of you have heard the social media attention given to clowns invading schools across the country this Friday. In particular there have been local news reports of social media postings that say this will happen in Vermont.
I first off would like to say that these postings have been investigated by law enforcement and have been found to not be credible.  In other words these reports have been investigated and found to be false.
With that, myself, Ms.. Kennison, Mrs. Maiberger and the entire staff have a responsibility to keep us all safe.  The building is locked and the only entrance to the inside during the day is in front of the main office.  We also have multiple cameras located around the building that allow us to see the outside.
I'd like to use this opportunity as a reminder to students and staff... never, never, never let anyone into the building through any door.  All visitors must use the main office entrance, sign in and take a visitor or substitute badge.
Again...The social media postings have been found to be a hoax and more importantly...we are safe.
If you have any questions and/or concerns...please feel free to email me.

Thanks

Kevin Briggs
Principal, EMS

September is over.....already?:  Each year the months seem to move faster and faster.  This year is no different.  It seems like yesterday when the halls became alive after a summer of cleaning and preparing.  Over the month of September, teams got back into the academic world and began to learn about each other and what it means to be a student at Essex Middle School.  Some teams went on hikes, others visited rope courses or even a few nights away at an environmental camp.   In every instance the goal is much larger than the enjoyment...it’s about our core values of the school:  Respect, Honesty, Compassion, Excellence, Life-Long Learning and Community.  My guess..these are similar to the same values you have in your life and family.  Every day student begin their day in homeroom in a circle setting greeting, listening and actively enjoying each other.  Within this 25 minute block each of the core values are addressed...sometimes specifically or other times modeled.

Open House: This year Open House has been set for Thursday, October 6, 2016.  I’ll be holding an informational meeting beginning at 5:30 regarding JumpRope, our online reporting system.  At this time you’ll be able to see what a report looks like and ask questions about the state standards and assessments to get a better understanding of the way Essex Middle School communicates your child’s progress.  Beginning at 6:00, the Unified Arts teachers, PE, Art, Music, DTE, FCS,  will be here to show their classrooms and answer questions you may have.  Beginning at 6:30, your child’s team classrooms will be available to visit and hear the amazing things being done and to be done..  I’ll be holding a meeting at 7:15 for 8th grade parents interested in learning more about the annual Washington DC field trip. (More info below)

Athletic Leadership Council:  Under the guidance of Chris Dumouchel, the Athletic Leadership Council has been meeting to build upon their leadership abilities.  The qualities, which may be thought of only on the field, or court...are really school and community wide.  Yesterday, four members attended a conference with over 200 other middle school students from across New England to discuss their roles at school.  Throughout the day and the ride home, they discussed how they could personally and collaboratively make a difference in the school.  Next Saturday morning, there is an ALC planned event of “weeding the flag pole garden.”

Senior Luncheon:  The third Wednesday of each month this year, EMS is host to the Seniors of the Essex Community.  A couple of weeks ago, 54 seniors joined our 6th graders for some Chicken and Biscuits followed by BINGO hosted by the ALC.  If you are a senior citizen or know of a senior that may be interested in knowing more or joining us, contact Lou-Ann Pioli at the Essex Junction Senior Center for tickets. (LPioli@essex.org)  The tickets are $2 for members of EJSC and $3 for non-members.  This month’s activity, ice breaker,  is being provided by the Cascade team.

Washington DC for 8th grade:  This past week we began the fundraising for the annual Washington DC field trip for our 8th graders.  There was a bit of confusion in that there are only a specific number of spots available….the reality is...we WILL make it work.  The three buses hold 162 people and this year’s class is 154 (as of today)….with chaperones we’re looking at 170 seats needed.  No worries.  If needed, we would rent a van to assure that every child planning on attending attends.  With that, please notify the office by either sending in a $75 check and DC form by October 28, 2016.  If you are in need of ANY financial support for your child to attend, please don’t hesitate to call or email me at kbriggs@etsd.org.  A reminder that there will be a DC informational meeting at Open House October 6, 2016 at 7:15pm.

JumpRope:  You should have received an email last week with a username and a password to allow you to see how your child is currently doing here at EMS.  More info to come at Open House.  If you didn’t receive an email.  Contact Hollee at hkennison@etsd.org or 879-7179.

Eagle News
September 9, 2016

Welcome to 2016-2017:  The halls are alive with smiles, laughter and positive energy.  I’ve always said that we are school of readers and now I have evidence.  On the first day of school, I saw many middle schoolers carrying in their books.  Some in nice neat bags from FMS and others...like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Regardless, Mrs. Musante shared with me two pieces of information.  One, she believes she brought back over 500 books to FMS!  Two, within the first three and half days, every student has signed out at least one book.  Thanks to all of you who are obviously taking the time to encourage reading as a vital part of your life.

Beginning at 6:30, your child’s team classrooms will be available to visit and hear the amzing things being done and to be done..  At 7:15 I’ll be holding a meeting for 8th grade parents interested in learning more about the annual Washington DC field trip.

Drop-off in the morning:  I understand the pressure of dropping off and getting to work ach morning.  Please, Please Please use the designated drop off zone.  Taking a short-cut is dangerous for our staff and any students in the parking area.  A suggestion may be to use Founder’s Road as a drop off area.  Your child can walk by where the students who ride their bikes park and you’ll be able to drop and go.  If you do drop them in the parking area, please drop and go.  Holding up the line just creates others to become impatient and want to go around or through.

JumpRope:  You’ll be receiving an email next week with a username and a password to allow you to see how your child is currently doing here at EMS.  More info to come at Open House.

Welcome to the 2016-2017

Welcome to the new school year.  A year of doing what we do well even better.  \

We have increased our staff by three this year.  With the retirements and out of country teaching opportunities, Essex Middle School was in need of filling three roles. The first was that of a half time Spanish Teacher.  Fortunately for us and Essex High School, we found a woman whose smile is contagious and knowledge of Spanish is remarkable.  Reina Guarnaccia comes to both of us eager and vibrant to teach our students not only about the language but also the cultures.

Kristen Johnson is filling the role of Shawn Willis, a beloved teacher by her students, families and staff.  No Problem!  During the interview and inservice, Kristen showed us why she's here.  She is a true professional with a great deal of knowledge and truly understanding of the middle school student.

Dana Cummings, who previously taught mathematics in the classroom is now our Math Interventionist.  This position is new to EMS and I'm looking forward to watching Dana share his knowledge of meeting the needs of the math students who are finding something confusing or need just a little more teaching.

With Dana filling the role, it allowed us to hire Therese Schroeder.  Therese has impressed me with meeting with families.  Like all of our staff she understands middle school students and increases the value of our staff.
